Throughout the last 60 years, guru after guru have told you that to be successful you’d have to set goal after goal. 

The more goals, the happier you’d become. Not only were we supposed to set an infinite amount of goals, but the bigger the goal, the happier we’d be. 

You’d miss out without having “goals” that are big and brash.

Remember the book “The Magic of Thinking Big”? According to this book, written over 50 years ago, most everyone makes the mistake of not thinking, well, big enough.

Huge goals!!

Goals for your relationships. Goals for your financial life. Goals for your business. Goals for your wellness.

Goal after goal would be written. We’d be drowning in goals. But something didn’t feel right.

The more goals we wrote the lower our self esteem became. We knew where we were heading but something felt off. The moment didn’t feel as present as it used to. You’d feel a foot in your past and a foot in your future but joy, in the moment, was sacrificed.

But what if I told you there was a better way. 

That goals have lost their power over the years and that a better way grounded in the moment is being used right now by the most successful people to maintain not only a high level of success, but their sanity.

The word goal is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as:

“An object of a ambition or effort. An aim, or desired result.”

Everyone, being so hell bent on goal seeking and defining, forgot to see how shallow the very definition of goal happens to be.

A goal is nothing more than a general direction when you think about it. There’s nothing specific or controllable about it. In today’s world, just having an “aim” is not enough. We want to be more effective and efficient when pursuing the betterment of the lives of ourselves and communities.

The word goal does nothing to help and we’d do better to delete it from our vocabulary and use the word result instead.

Have Results, Not Goals

A result is defined as a consequence, effect, or outcome of something.

It is specific, clear, and makes you think in the moment.

Use the word Result when thinking about taking steps forward in changing your life for the better. Plus, the word Goal has a lot of negative connotations to it. Use the word Result to bring fresh energy to your personal change management.

The Goal Setting Formula

Current “Goal Setting” philosophies ask you to do away with thinking in the present and to only focus on the future. However, acknowledging your present moment through clearly defining your current results gives you a lot more power in the present to change your direction from that of failure to that of success.

What does it look like in Practice?

If you’re looking for change in an area of your life, don’t write goals, write your current results in that area of your life.

If your income is currently $80,000 a year, that is your current result.

Now dive in deeper. 

Ask why you are making $80,000 a year.

In this example, you could come up with the following:

  • I have a good job but am in danger of being comfortable.

  • I don’t have the education to make the promotion.

  • To make more I’ll probably have to start my own business, but I don’t know how.

  • The people I hang out with aren’t supportive of my ideas.

This exercise came up with 4 very clear obstacles to overcome that are creating your specific current results.

Now think of ways to solve those obstacles to change your direction.

Become Experimental: Use the Power of Hypothesis to Steer Your New Future

A Hypothesis is a scientific approach towards solving a problem. The formula usually starts with something to the effect of “If (blank), then (blank) will happen.”

By applying Hypothesis in your results driven approach, you start to become a lot more specific in how you act.

Let’s apply it to the above 4 points.

  1. If I was on edge and didn’t feel comfortable, I’d have more motivation to get the better job.

  2. If I had a bachelors degree, I’d get the promotion and more.

  3. If I knew how to start my own business, I’d earn a lot more money.

  4. If I hung out with more inspiring people, I’d have a lot more confidence when moving forward with my ambition.

Brainstorm Actions from these New Hypotheses Statements

Ask yourself what you can do today to prove your hypotheses.

What are small steps you can take right now.

Reach out to that University about what you can do. Drop that negative friend by blocking his number on your phone. 

Your steering your new reality into your present.
